20170416 - Gran Canaria - Day 10

On our last full day on the island, we visited Roque Nublo.

From the parking lot by the main road, it is a nice little walk up to the plateau where the big rock stands on. The view is awesome all the way.

When walking up you see the rock quite early, before it stays hidden until you reach the plateau.

There are some funky rock formations and a cave along the path.

As I mentioned, the view is fabulous.

We are tourists, after all.

It takes a while before the hugeness of the rock sinks in, even after you have reached the plateau.

When you get closer, and think you will be able to perhaps climb the rock, you notice tiny dots moving on the top of the rock. And the dots turn out to be people, and you realise that it is still a way to go, and that you will not be able to climb the thing.

Many years ago, my brother and I visited this same spot. I shot a photo with my one of my all time favourite lenses, the Canon 200mm f/1.8, in the direction you see here. The light was much better, the shadows nicer, the trees more lush, but the focus was way of. Ever since then I have tried to recreate that photo with better focus, without much luck.

From Roque Nublo, you can see this plateau. Check out the buildings on the edges of the mountain in the bottom part of the photo. What an amazing place. That area is called Acusa Verde, and a couple of the houses on the brim have rooms you can rent.

Just chilling in the shadows.

The "little" rock on the plateau is called the frog. People climb both rocks when the weather allows it.

There are quite a few small caves, and at least one larger one, along the path.

Again, the wonderful view of the rocky and arid combined with the lush landscape.
