Books related to photography

All photographers need inspiration every now and then. I've found books to be a good source. Over the years I have amassed a small library of books related to photography and art. I hope that by building a "review library" of my books, you too can find some inspiration from them. If time permits, I'll add two books per week. Follow me on twitter or subscribe to my newsletter (big orange box to the right) for updates.

Not all the books in my library are listed here. Only the ones I really like.

One of the very best "field guides" I ever owned. Matched only perhaps by the book The Art Of Color Photography by John Hedgecoe, this is the one of my strongest influencers in my early years as a budding photographer. Strong points are the very easy to understand descriptions of the different technical aspects of photography, and the interviews with different well known photographers.     As you may know, I do quite a bit of fine art nude photography. Getting things right in the beginning is not always easy, so a few good how-to-book may come in handy. This uses easy to understand diagrams to show different light setups both for studio and outdoors work. The diagrams are coupled with the finished pictures, and include camera, lens and exposure information.

All though this book is heavily centered around analogue printing of black&white photos it still falls safely within my list of top inspirational books. Author & photographer Les McLean has a journalistic style and presence that really engages the viewer of his photos. In the last chapters of the book he covers some PhotoShop techniques on doing black&white conversions. This of course gets dated pretty quickly, but the imagery in the book outweighs this slight drawback.     Exquisite nature photography, wonderfully printed black&white photos, and add the mystical effect of _real_ tilt&shift photography, and you get this BIG format book A Shadow Falls by Nick Brandt. I can only say : Get This Book. It's a mindblower, every time you open it. But watch out, it could get you stuck in an expensive tilt&shift-lens-loop.
